Kansai Transport & Access Guide
From Kansai International Airport or Itami Airport into the heart of Osaka and Kyoto, and travel between the two cities. The main lines and rough journey-time guidelines, put together from the perspective of a team that runs guesthouses. (Journey times are approximate. Please check each operator's official information for fares and timetables.)
From Kansai International Airport (KIX) into Osaka
Kansai International Airport (KIX) is Kansai's gateway by air. Built on a man-made island in Osaka Bay, it connects to the city by a single train ride. The most convenient line depends on where you're headed.
- Toward Shin-Osaka & Osaka Station
- The JR limited express "Haruka" reaches Shin-Osaka Station with no transfers in about 50 minutes. It also stops at Osaka Station.
- Toward Namba
- The Nankai Railway is handy. The limited express "Rapi:t" takes about 38 minutes, and the Airport Express about 44 minutes—both run direct to Namba.
- Toward Tennoji
- The JR limited express "Haruka" takes about 30 minutes. The JR Kansai-Airport Rapid Service also runs direct.
- To Osaka Station on local lines
- The JR Kansai-Airport Rapid Service runs to Osaka Station (via the Osaka Loop Line) with no transfers. It takes roughly one hour.
- Limousine Bus
- Airport limousine buses also serve major destinations such as Umeda, Namba, and USJ.
From Kansai International Airport to Kyoto
If you're heading straight to Kyoto, you can go directly from Kansai Airport with no transfers.
- Toward Kyoto Station
- The JR limited express "Haruka" runs from Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station with no transfers in about 80 minutes.
- Limousine Bus
- There is also an airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport to the Hachijo-guchi side of Kyoto Station.
From Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport)
Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport) has "International" in its name, but today it mainly handles domestic flights. It serves as a gateway into Kansai from across Japan.
- Toward Umeda & Namba
- The airport limousine bus is convenient, running direct. By train, take the Osaka Monorail to Hotarugaike and transfer to the Hankyu line.
- Toward Kyoto
- There is an airport limousine bus bound for Kyoto Station.
Between Osaka and Kyoto
Osaka and Kyoto are about 30 minutes apart by train. Stay in one and make an easy day trip to the other. The most convenient line varies by destination.
- Fast by JR
- The JR Kyoto Line Special Rapid Service runs from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station in about 30 minutes, with no transfers.
- To Kawaramachi by Hankyu
- The Hankyu Kyoto Line limited express runs from Osaka-umeda to Kyoto-kawaramachi (Shijo-Kawaramachi) in about 45 minutes.
- To Gion by Keihan
- The Keihan Main Line runs from Yodoyabashi and Nakanoshima to Gion-shijo (Gion, Yasaka Shrine) and Demachiyanagi (Shimogamo). It reaches Kyoto's east side directly, without passing through Kyoto Station.
- Shin-Osaka⇔Kyoto by Shinkansen
- Shin-Osaka Station and Kyoto Station are just about 13 minutes apart on the Tokaido Shinkansen—remarkably close.
Major Terminals & Transit Cards
Osaka and Kyoto have several large terminals, each with a different role. Knowing them makes getting around easier.
- Shin-Osaka
- The gateway for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. It connects to Osaka Station and Kyoto Station via the JR Kyoto Line.
- Osaka Station & Umeda
- A major hub in the Kita (north) district, where JR local lines, Hankyu, Hanshin, and the Osaka Metro all converge.
- Namba
- A terminal in the Minami (south) district, where the Nankai (toward the airport and Wakayama) and Kintetsu (toward Nara and Ise) lines gather.
- IC Cards
- IC cards such as ICOCA are widely accepted on Kansai's trains and buses. They support nationwide mutual use, so cards from other regions like Suica and PASMO work as-is too.
