쓰텐카쿠——파리와 에펠탑을 더한, 메이지의 탑 초대 쓰텐카쿠가 완성된 것은 1912년(메이지 45년) 7월 3일 . 설계는 시타라 사다오이며, 그 의장은 「파리 개선문 위에 에펠탑의 위쪽 절반을 올린 」 것이라 표현되었습니다. 개선문 위에 에펠탑이 돋아나 있다——지금 들으면 엉뚱하지만, 당시 오사카가 품고 있던 「세계를 따라잡는다」는 기분이 그대로 형태가 된 듯한 탑이었습니다.
이름을 붙인 것은 유학자 후지사와 난가쿠. 「하늘에 통하는 높은 건물 」이라는 뜻입니다. 높이는 약 75미터. 당시에는 동양 제일의 높이라 일컬어졌습니다.
이 초대는 현존하지 않습니다. 1943년(쇼와 18년) 1월 , 발치에 있던 영화관에서 난 불이 옮겨붙어 탑이 손상됩니다. 다만 직접적인 최후는 화재가 아니었습니다. 복구되지 못한 채 전시하의 금속류 회수령에 의해 철재가 공출되어 , 같은 해 2월부터 해체되었습니다. 거리의 상징이 그대로 전쟁의 자재가 된 것입니다.
지금 서 있는 것은 2대째, 1956년(쇼와 31년) 10월 완성된 것입니다. 지역 상점주들이 출자하여 재건했습니다. 설계는 나이토 다추 ——도쿄 타워와 나고야 텔레비전 탑을 손댄, 「탑 박사」라 불린 인물입니다. 높이는 피뢰침을 포함해 108미터. 즉 이 탑은 한 번 잃어버린 것을 거리 사람들이 자비로 다시 세운 탑인 셈입니다.
빌리켄——미국에서 태어난 신이, 어째서 오사카에 있는가 쓰텐카쿠 하면, 발바닥을 긁으면 소원이 이루어진다는 빌리켄 . 실은 이 신, 일본 태생이 아닙니다. 1908년, 미국 미주리주 캔자스시티 의 미술 교사이자 일러스트레이터였던 플로렌스 프레츠 가 디자인하여 의장 특허를 취득한 캐릭터입니다. 이름은 당시 대통령 윌리엄 하워드 태프트의 애칭 「빌리」에서 유래했다고 합니다.
다이쇼 초기, 이 유행이 일본에 전해져 초대 쓰텐카쿠 기슭에 있던 유원지 루나파크 안의 「빌리켄당」에 안치되었습니다. 그런데 1923년 루나파크가 폐원 하자, 빌리켄은 행방불명이 되어버립니다.
부활한 것은 1979년 . 쓰텐카쿠 전망층에 2대째가 복원되었고, 2012년 , 초대 쓰텐카쿠 건설로부터 100년의 매듭에 3대째로 교체되었습니다. 미국에서 태어나, 오사카에서 한 번 사라졌다가, 반세기 후에 다시 조각되어 돌아왔다——빌리켄의 발바닥을 쓰다듬을 때, 그런 내력을 지닌 신이라 생각하면 조금 흥미롭습니다.

거리의 남쪽 절반은 뉴욕. 뉴욕 코니아일랜드의 동명 시설을 본뜬 유원지 「루나파크 」가 놓였습니다. 부지는 약 13만 제곱미터, 동물원과 온천, 극장, 활동사진관을 갖춘 대규모 오락 시설입니다. 쓰텐카쿠와 루나파크 사이는 로프웨이로 이어져 있었습니다.

여기서 피해 갈 수 없는 것이 구시카쓰의 「두 번 찍기 금지」 . 관광객이 가장 먼저 배우는 규칙이지만, 이유는 지극히 실무적입니다. 소스 용기를 손님이 공용하기 때문 ——한 번 입을 댄 꼬치를 다시 용기에 넣지 않는다는 위생상의 약속입니다.
그러면 소스가 부족할 때는 어떻게 하는가. 무료로 놓여 있는 양배추로 소스를 떠서 꼬치에 끼얹는다. 이것이 방식입니다. 애초에 양배추가 곁들여지는 것은 튀김의 느끼함을 덜어주기 위해서이기도 합니다.

덴가차야라는 지명과, 스미요시 대사 「덴가차야」라는 지명에는 이런 이야기가 전해집니다. 덴쇼 연간, 이 땅에 메기 고헤에라는 인물이 찻집을 열었습니다. 3대째 무렵, 스미요시 대사 참배 도중에 들른 도요토미 히데요시 가 찻집의 맑은 샘을 마음에 들어 하여, 센노 리큐 에게 차를 달이게 했더니 그 맛에 감격. 샘에 「메구미노미즈(은혜의 물)」라는 이름을 내린 데서, 「간파쿠 전하의 찻집」 「천하인의 찻집」이라 불리게 되었다——고 전해집니다 (사실로 확정된 것은 아닙니다).
